ARTIST STATEMENT

At the age of ten. I was given a subscription to Arizona Highways magazine. I cut out several nature pictures and displayed them on my bedroom wall, and each day as I viewed them, I was nourished and inspired. Thus began my lifelong journey of exploring and photographing nature.

I have spent thirty-five years refining my vision as a photographer. I have hiked through forests and deserts, lugged my camera gear through rain, mud and snow, and sought out the special light that reveals hidden beauty. Through intimate landscapes and close-up details, my photographs highlight and celebrate the wonders of nature.

By developing my skills as a fine art printmaker. I have been able to create expressive and archival photographs that faithfully share my experiences. As a pioneer of new color management and digital printing technologies, I have shared my expertise with many fellow nature photographers.

PERSONAL HISTORY

Bill travels a great deal-flying, driving, hiking and backpacking-to experience nature's splendor firsthand. He uses Hasselblad, Nikon and Linhof cameras to capture images onto fine grained transparency film. To record colors most accurately on film, Bill uses a color meter and corrective filters to balance the color of light to the film.

Although Bill became a full time nature photographer, his name is also well known in the field of software design. Years ago, as a member of the original Macintosh team at Apple Computer, he designed much of the initial Macintosh user interface, and wrote the original QuickDraw, MacPaint and HyperCard software. After years of designing software tools to empower other creative people, Bill is now being empowered in his own art by the accuracy and fine control made possible with the digital printing process.
